Dr. Diego Arufe completed his medical studies at the Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2005. In 2010, he finished his residency in Internal Medicine at the “Alfredo Lanari” Institute for Medical Research. He then pursued a fellowship in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation at the Austral University Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2011–2013). During his training and until 2018, he worked as a physician in the Intensive Care Unit at Sanatorio Mater Dei, Buenos Aires.
He is currently the Head of Hepatology at Sanatorio Sagrado Corazón, where he leads a fellowship training program, and also serves as a Hepatologist at Austral University Hospital. His interest in ultrasound began in 2009, when he completed a postgraduate course in Ultrasound and Doppler at the Argentine Society of Ultrasonography in Medicine and Biology (SAUMB).
For over 14 years, he has integrated the concept of POCUS (Point-of-Care Ultrasound) into his daily practice. In the field of hepatology, this led him to coin the term HEPOCUS—a concept that, for him, represents the strategic use of ultrasound to answer specific liver-related clinical questions and enhance patient care.
Dr. Arufe has coordinated HEPOCUS courses for the Argentine Society of Hepatology (SAHE) and the Latin American Association for the Study of the Liver (ALEH). He is considered a leading expert in the use of liver elastography. He firmly believes that POCUS has revolutionized medical practice, and in particular, that HEPOCUS enables faster and more efficient diagnostic processes, with a positive impact on the quality of patient care.
