Jon Umlauf, DPT, DSc, RMSK is a physical therapist with extensive expertise in orthopedics and diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS). He earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from the Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy in 2012, followed by a Doctor of Science (DSc) in Orthopedics from Baylor University in 2018. In 2024, he completed a Master’s in Health Professions Education from the Uniformed Services University.
Dr. Umlauf is board-certified in Orthopaedics, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT), and certified in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound (RMSK). He received his MSKUS training from the faculty at the National Capital Consortium–Fort Belvoir Community Hospital Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship and earned his RMSK certification in 2017. He later served for four years on the Alliance for Physician Certification & Advancement (APCA) RMSK assessment committee, contributing to the development of examination standards for MSK ultrasound certification.
During his military career, Dr. Umlauf served in various orthopedic settings, deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and was the personal physical therapist to the Secretary of State. He also trained hundreds of military and civilian medical professionals, including MDs, DOs, PAs, PTs, OTs, and ATCs, in MSK ultrasound.
After transitioning from the Army, Dr. Umlauf joined the George Washington University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program as a core faculty member, where he continues to train healthcare professionals in MSK ultrasound. His research interests focus on self-efficacy development and the transfer of MSKUS training to clinical practice, aiming to optimize learning strategies that enhance skill acquisition and practitioner confidence in ultrasound use. Beyond his professional work, he enjoys rock climbing, running, cycling, and hiking.
