Dr. Salvador Portugal is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where he serves as Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and Medical Director of Sports Medicine Rehabilitation. He is an Interventional Spine & Sports Medicine Physiatrist at the NYU Langone Orthopedic Center.
He completed his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the NYU Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine and fellowship in Musculoskeletal/Pain Medicine at UMDNJ–New Jersey Medical School. He is board certified in PM&R and Sports Medicine, with additional certification in Musculoskeletal Sonography (RMSK).
Dr. Portugal serves as President of the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (NYSPMR) and Head Team Physician for St. Joseph’s University–Brooklyn athletics. Nationally, he is a member of the Residency & Fellowship Directors Council of the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the Council of PM&R State Society Presidents, and the Program Planning Committee for the American Academy of PM&R. He also contributes to the Sports Economics Workgroup of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
A recognized educator, he directs the musculoskeletal ultrasound curriculum for the NYU PM&R residency and teaches at national ultrasound courses. He has received multiple Teacher of the Year Awards and is listed among Castle Connolly Top Doctors and New York Super Doctors.
