Dr. Zachary Self earned his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, and subsequently graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine residency training at Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, CA. While in residency, he founded the U.S. based nonprofit organization, Wachalal, as well as its sister nonprofit organization in Guatemala, Ajkun Pa Le Qatinimit. These two organizations funded the construction of and directly support the ongoing healthcare provided at the unique, purpose-built, hybrid medical center that Dr. Self operates in the community of Santo Tomás la Unión, Suchitepéquez, in rural Guatemala. Dr. Self has completed fellowships in both ultrasound and resuscitation and acute critical care. He has successfully passed the National Board of Echocardiography’s Examination of Special Competence in Critical Care Echocardiography (CCEeXAM). Dr. Self uses POCUS daily to care for his neighbors in rural Guatemala as well as the patients he cares for in the Emergency Department when he commutes several times each year to work at a critical access hospital in northern California. He is particularly adept at echocardiography and lung ultrasound. When not working, Dr. Self enjoys running through the coffee fields behind his home in Guatemala and rolling in the mud with his four children as preparation for competing in Obstacle Course races.
