Bedside ultrasound has consistently influenced my diagnostic and management decisions. It reduces the need for “watching and waiting” or “sitting with uncertainty,” by providing clear, non-invasive answers in minutes.

It’s immensely rewarding for that part of me that seeks a higher level of diagnostic certainty, which I can then share with confidence with my patients. This not only builds trust and strengthens rapport but also makes me a better clinician, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes. The best way to determine if bedside ultrasound is right for you is to try it — you’ll quickly see how it can greatly enhance your professional practice.

Dr Alberto Romero Galán, is a specialist in family and community medicine, and a mentor for clinical ultrasound in Spain as a member of the ultrasound group of the Spanish Society of General and Family Medicine (SEMG). He is also registered as an IMC (Irish Medical Council) specialist in Ireland.

He works as a GP in out-of-hours services in Ireland and serves as a GP in the Irish Army in the barracks in Kilkenny. Alberto participates as a teacher of clinical ultrasound courses in person in Spain, with several in person courses during the year. One of them is of long duration (100 hours) and is held twice a year, offering students continuous teaching for several days, with direct supervision, and practical and theoretical classes. The rest of the courses are usually subject specific (neck, abdomen, musculoskeletal…).

Alberto was born in Huelva (Spain), where he grew up and was educated until he moved to Seville to study Medicine. Once he finished his medical degree, he moved to Salamanca, where he did his specialized training period (equivalent to residency) as a family doctor, using ultrasound as a key tool in his practice for the study of patients. After that he worked as a doctor in a primary care center, until he moved to Ireland in 2022. This did not stop his training in ultrasound, which he has kept active in Spain and has allowed him to become a mentor.

“Learning is made easier by the support provided to each student.”

GUSI provided education in the areas I wanted and needed, right from my home and office environment. I recommend this curriculum highly. It’s not just the way the course material is presented—learning is made easier by the support provided to each student throughout the program.

“POCUS Has Allowed Me to Find New Excitement in Primary Care, and Reduces Burnout by Providing Quicker Answers to Medical Problems in Real Time.”

POCUS has allowed me to find new excitement in primary care, and reduces burnout by providing quicker answers to medical problems in real time. By improving my diagnostic skills, and increasing my interaction with patients, I hope to continue to have POCUS as an integral part of my practice!

“It is an honour to serve with such a wonderful team of GUSI instructors in promoting POCUS in Ukraine.

In the last two years, we have gone through a war with the post-Soviet academic community, which prohibits us from using ultrasound. With our FOCUS-POCUS team in Ukraine, we train family doctors, military medics, and paramedics in the basic protocols like FAST, BLUE, and RUSH [which are] needed during daily Russian bombing on the frontline. It is an honour to serve with such a wonderful team of GUSI instructors in promoting POCUS in Ukraine.

“The POCUS workshop was clinically oriented and well-taught by experienced instructors [who were patient and engaging with new learners].”

The team at GUSI was fantastic—very knowledgeable and professional. Their POCUS workshop was clinically oriented and well-organized, and well-taught by highly experienced instructors who were engaging and patient with new learners. Our residency faculty felt that the sessions really empowered and inspired us to do more ultrasound scanning and get better at it. This was the perfect introductory course that our group needed to get a head start in POCUS, and we look forward to working with GUSI more in the future doing Tele-Ultrasound mentorship sessions.

“Bedside ultrasound gave me greater diagnostic certainty [in minutes], which I could share with confidence with my patients.”

Bedside ultrasound has consistently influenced my diagnostic and management decisions. It reduces the need for “watching and waiting” or “sitting with uncertainty” by providing clear, non-invasive answers in minutes. It’s immensely rewarding for that part of me that seeks a higher level of diagnostic certainty, which I can then share with confidence with my patients. This not only builds trust and strengthens rapport but also makes me a better clinician, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes. The best way to determine if bedside ultrasound is right for you is to try it—you’ll quickly see how it can greatly enhance your professional practice.

“It’s a solid foundation for anyone newer to OB POCUS, but still teaches plenty of advanced skills for clinicians with more experience.”

I highly recommend this fantastic course. It’s a solid foundation for anyone newer to OB POCUS, but still teaches plenty of advanced skills for clinicians with more experience. As someone who teaches both residents and OB Fellows, I’m impressed with the high quality educational content. Going through the curriculum myself was a great review, and has equipped me with new ways to teach OB POCUS

“The Obstetric Essentials POCUS course gave me a clear framework for how to approach obstetric ultrasound [in real clinical settings].”

The OB Essentials POCUS course gave me a clear framework for how to approach obstetric ultrasound. The videos are engaging, easy to follow, and filled with practical tips and advice on how to troubleshoot. The course helped me to understand how to approach OB ultrasound based on gestational age, and helped me build my skills in the clinical setting. Highly recommend!

“GUSI provided exactly the training I needed to introduce POCUS to the community health workers I work with in rural Guatemala.”

GUSI provided exactly the training I needed to enable me to introduce POCUS to the group of community health workers I work with in rural Guatemala. Although I hadn’t touched an OB ultrasound in 25 years, the GUSI online and in-person OB course gave me the tools I needed. I successfully replicated their “Big 5” training in Guatemala, and every community health worker learned how to scan pregnant women for these critical findings. The most thrilling moment was when we discovered that one of the CHWs herself was 13 weeks pregnant—with twins! This wouldn’t have been possible without GUSI.

“GUSI made it possible to learn ultrasound without traveling across the country [or needing a radiology background].”

The instructors are experienced and knowledgeable. The mentors are the best—patient, kind, knowledgeable, and supportive. The time spent with my mentor was always enjoyable. I couldn’t believe I used all my sessions [because each one was so valuable]. I’ve had an interest in ultrasound for a while but never thought I’d find a curriculum designed for non-radiologists that didn’t require multiple trips around the country. It’s not just the way the coursework is presented—learning is made easier by the support provided to each student. My goal for learning POCUS was to teach Internal Medicine residents Point-of-Care Ultrasound. GUSI has made that goal a reality. I’m having so much fun [and gaining confidence every step of the way]!!

Alberto Romero Galán

Instructor

He enjoys reading, especially crime novels. His love for ultrasound has made its study into a hobby, as well. He also loves paddle tennis, ping-pong, board games, and soccer. He likes to travel, and his current job and situation allow him to do it often.

Jori Enfield

Instructor

Jori Enfield, OMS-V, is a medical student at Touro University California, an Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Teaching Fellow, and the founder and President of GUSI MedConnect—the national medical student engagement initiative of the Global Ultrasound Institute. Through MedConnect, he has launched instructor training programs, led educational content development, consulted on technology innovation projects, and built a national network of student educators, faculty mentors, and institutional collaborators to expand access to point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) education.

Jori integrates POCUS into osteopathic medicine, primary care, and medical education, with extensive experience in clinical ultrasound instruction and curriculum development across diverse healthcare settings. As an OMM Fellow, he explores the interface between palpatory diagnosis and ultrasound imaging to enhance structural and functional assessment. He is a recipient of the Touro University California Dean’s Research Grant for a POCUS-based study evaluating clinical utility and educational outcomes in medical student training.

Beyond POCUS, Jori focuses on advancing osteopathic manipulative medicine, integrative and functional medicine frameworks, and leveraging wearable and multimodal biometric data for precision health interventions.

Joe Breuner

Instructor

Dr. Breuner decided to become a doctor because his grandfather was one and he watched the TV show M.A.S.H. when he was growing up. He majored in Government at Harvard and attended medical school at UCSD.

After residency at the University of Washington in Seattle, he spent a year caring for Afghan refugees in Pakistan.  Upon his return, he chose a career as a community clinic provider at the 45th St Clinic and served as medical director until 1999. He came to Swedish Family Medicine to teach in 2000 and really enjoys practicing and teaching medicine. He sees patients at Downtown Family Medicine, a small clinic caring for the underserved in downtown Seattle. His clinical interests are obstetrics, mental health, and procedural training.

In 2003, he started the obstetrics fellowship, which provides advanced training in operative obstetrics to family physicians. The fellowship has over forty graduates and more than two thirds are currently doing cesarean sections in diverse practice locations all across the country. The fellowship gives him a chance to work with incredibly talented and motivated family physicians, which he really enjoys.

He enjoys being part of the faculty and resident band called ‘Plan B’; this doubles as a chance to play and write music, and a faculty balint.

He has three kids, who range in age from high school to college. They are rapidly growing beyond his ability to help them with math or look them in the eye.  His interests are rowing, running, golf, music, and snowboarding.

Courtney Wright

Dr. Courtney Wright completed her Family Medicine Residency at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in California. She has integrated POCUS into a wide range of clinical settings, including high-risk obstetric care, labor and delivery including surgical obstetrics, emergency departments, and inpatient medicine at a critical access hospital.

One of her most memorable POCUS moments occurred when she wheeled a dusty ultrasound machine—discovered tucked away in the corner of a rural ED— to the inpatient unit. A surprised radiology tech stopped her in the hallway and exclaimed, “What are you doing with that? I’ve never seen a doctor use it!”

Dr. Wright is deeply committed to providing whole-person care to underserved communities, with particular interests in reproductive health and the use of bedside ultrasound for procedural guidance. She enjoys teaching and mentoring learners across the clinical spectrum in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Maytal Firnberg

Ben Howard

Instructor

Dr. Ben Howard is a Family Physician and POCUS Champion at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

After completing residency at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, he joined a full-spectrum practice in rural Iowa. Dr. Howard had the opportunity to work with medical students in his rural practice, and this ignited a passion for teaching. He then transitioned into academic medicine and has enjoyed working with residents and medical students. Early in his transition to academic medicine, he completed a POCUS fellowship through the Ultrasound Leadership Academy.

While serving as residency faculty, he has developed a POCUS curriculum, directed a POCUS CME course for medical staff, and frequently teaches medical students at the local medical school. Currently, he maintains a full-spectrum practice, including inpatient, clinic, and obstetrical care. Dr. Howard has a particular interests in medical education and rural medicine and the applications for POCUS in these settings.
