Pre-Conference POCUS Workshop Course Description:
Join the Pre-Conference POCUS Workshop hosted by the South African Academy of Family Physicians (SAAFP) for a full-day of hands-on ultrasound training. This event supports family physicians looking to strengthen their clinical practice with core POCUS skills.
Covered topics include:
- Introduction to POCUS principles
- Machine settings and image quality
- Trauma ultrasound (eFAST)
- Lung ultrasound for respiratory assessment
- Basic cardiac scanning (echo)
- DVT evaluation
- FASH protocol (ultrasound in HIV care)
This workshop is part of the SAAFP pre-conference series and provides a practical foundation in POCUS for clinicians.

Can international participants attend GUSI in-person courses?
Yes, we welcome international participants. With backgrounds in global health, GUSI faculty have taught POCUS across Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, and we currently support learners in over 120 countries worldwide. In alignment with our mission for health equity, GUSI adjusts pricing structure for resource-limited settings to improve access and impact.
Do you provide accommodation recommendations and special rates?
Yes, for many courses we secure special group rates at nearby hotels. For example, our Portland courses include discounted rates at Residence Inn Portland Downtown/RiverPlace. We provide booking details, deadlines, and reservation links to registered participants. Course location details are provided to all registered learners in advance.
Will I receive CME credits and a certificate of completion?
Yes, you will receive both CME credits (typically 13.5-16 hours depending on the specific course) and a certificate of completion. GUSI also provides a transcript with lessons completed and test scores. For residents, we provide residency directors with a template for minimum scanning competency based on AAFP curriculum guidelines.
Do I need any prior ultrasound experience to attend?
No prior ultrasound experience is required. Our courses are designed for all experience levels, from complete beginners to those seeking to advance their skills. We recommend reviewing the “Scanning Technique” videos in your complimentary online course access before attending for an optimized learning experience.
What is included in the course registration fee?
Your registration includes all hands-on training sessions, expert instruction, course materials, and CME credits (typically 13.5-16 hours depending on the course). You also receive complimentary access to our online course content typically for 3 months post-course (valued at $309), which includes additional CME hours for other essential POCUS applications.
