    POCUS for Anesthesia Professionals Course Description:

    GUSI’s POCUS for Anesthesia Professionals course, presented in partnership with Jefferson Healthcare, is a one-day, accelerated training designed to equip perioperative clinicians with the diagnostic ultrasound skills most relevant to daily anesthesia practice. Built for anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs), and other licensed clinicians involved in perioperative care, the course combines focused didactic instruction with extensive hands-on lab time across every major application area.

    Participants will start with the fundamentals of ultrasound physics, transducer selection, and image optimization before progressing through a series of clinically focused modules: lung ultrasound (identifying pneumothorax, pulmonary edema, and pneumonia patterns), focused cardiac echo (pericardial effusion, ejection fraction, right ventricular strain), gastric POCUS for preoperative aspiration risk assessment, and multi-systemic volume status evaluation, including VEXUS scoring.

    The course also covers image-guided procedural skills essential to anesthesia practice, including ultrasound guidance for central venous catheterization (needle visualization, guidewire and catheter confirmation, and post-procedure pneumothorax checks) and for neuraxial anesthesia (midline localization, spinal level identification, and depth/trajectory planning).

    Each topic pairs a focused set of sonographic questions with dedicated lab time, ensuring participants leave with practical, applicable scanning technique — not just theoretical knowledge. The course concludes with a discussion of clinical integration topics such as coding and billing, image archiving, and quality assurance, along with a post-test to reinforce learning outcomes.

    GUSI provided exactly the training I needed to enable me to introduce POCUS to the group of community health workers I work with in rural Guatemala. Although I hadn’t touched an OB ultrasound in 25 years, the GUSI online and in-person OB course gave me the tools I needed. I successfully replicated their “Big 5” training in Guatemala, and every community health worker learned how to scan pregnant women for these critical findings. The most thrilling moment was when we discovered that one of the CHWs herself was 13 weeks pregnant—with twins! This wouldn’t have been possible without GUSI.
