Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is becoming an essential bedside skill for clinicians across primary care, family medicine, internal medicine, and urgent care. This two-day course, hosted by the Global Ultrasound Institute in partnership with the University of Illinois Chicago, gives primary care providers a structured, hands-on path to building real scanning competency — not just watching demonstrations.
Taking place March 12–13, 2027 in Chicago, IL, the course follows GUSI’s Primary Care Standard curriculum: a two-day agenda built around the exams primary care clinicians use most. Day one covers the fundamentals of probe handling and image optimization before moving into gallbladder and AAA screening, a rapid abdominal exam review, first-trimester OB and IUD localization, focused cardiac echo, lung ultrasound, and DVT assessment. Day two shifts into applied and advanced work, with open scan time, skin and soft tissue evaluation and ultrasound-guided injections, upper and lower extremity MSK scanning, a team-based OSCE, and a wrap-up session on advanced applications.
Instruction is led by experienced physician-educators who are also active POCUS practitioners, in a flipped-classroom format designed to maximize hands-on scanning time rather than passive lecture. Participants scan using a range of handheld and portable systems provided by GUSI, including the Exo Iris, GE Vscan Air, and Butterfly iQ3/iQ+, on live scanning models — so you leave comfortable across multiple probe types and platforms, not just one.
No prior ultrasound experience is required. Every registrant also receives complimentary access to GUSI’s online POCUS Essentials course for 1–2 months following the live training, extending the learning beyond the two in-person days. Whether you’re building a POCUS program from scratch or adding new applications to an existing practice, this course is designed to get you scanning confidently and integrating ultrasound into everyday clinical decision-making.
