Carotid plaque

Carotid plaque refers to the buildup of fatty substances, cholesterol, and other materials within the carotid arteries, which are major blood vessels in the neck supplying blood to the brain. This accumulation, part of atherosclerosis, can narrow the arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of stroke.

In vascular ultrasound, carotid plaque is a critical finding. Sonographers meticulously visualize and measure these plaques to assess their stability, size, and degree of stenosis, aiding in the diagnosis and management of carotid artery disease. Ultrasound provides real-time, non-invasive imaging, crucial for monitoring plaque progression and guiding treatment decisions in medical practice.
