BLUE protocol

The BLUE protocol (Bedside Lung Ultrasound in Emergency) is a rapid ultrasound algorithm used in critical care to diagnose the cause of acute respiratory failure. This point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) method systematically evaluates lung and pleural signs, such as lung sliding, A-lines, B-lines, and pleural effusion, to quickly identify conditions like pneumothorax, pulmonary edema, pneumonia, and pleural effusions. Its efficiency makes it invaluable for swift decision-making in emergency and critical care settings.

This ultrasound protocol enhances diagnostic accuracy by offering real-time visualization of lung pathology, reducing reliance on less timely or portable imaging modalities. Crucially, the BLUE protocol aids in guiding immediate interventions, improving patient outcomes in critical care. It’s a cornerstone in modern medical ultrasound for rapid assessment of respiratory distress.
