On June 11, GUSI Fellows Dr. Viviano, Dr. Averill, and Dr. Mannings (from Scotland, Devon & Cornwall) completed a 6-hour ultrasound training session under the expert guidance of Dr. Pascual Daza-Ramirez.
They practiced scanning key anatomic structures, including:
Heart | Lungs | Kidneys | GB/Liver | Abdominal Aorta Pelvic Organs | Femoral Veins
Huge thanks to Sonoscanner for providing the U-Lite device to power this hands-on POCUS training!
On June 9, GUSI is proud to be represented by Dr. Andrew Cupples at the ASPC Conference in Leicester, where over 50 UK General Practitioners with specialist skills in surgery and MSK medicine explored the clinical value of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). Alongside MSK sonographer Scott Rogers and our partners at Sonoscanner – Premium Ultrasound Scanners, hands-on scanning demos offered GPs practical insight into how ultrasound is transforming MSK diagnostics in primary care.
Looking ahead: GUSI is excited to support regional MSK POCUS training across England in the coming months.
On May 22, Dr. Pascual Daza-Ramirez, GUSI’s Education Director for Europe, presented the clinical benefits of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) to Family Medicine residents at Barnet Hospital, London.
The session featured a hands-on demonstration of wrist median nerve scanning using Sonoscanner’s U-Lite and T-Lite devices. Residents practiced measuring the median nerve cross-sectional area in real-time, applying POCUS to rule out carpal tunnel syndrome in minutes. POCUS in family medicine is a reliable, accessible diagnostic tool—and GUSI is proud to support clinicians in bringing it into daily consultations.

On May 17, Dr. Andrew Cupples, Lead Instructor representing GUSI, delivered a presentation on Scrotal Ultrasound to 17 GPs with extended training in vasectomy as part of the Northern Ireland GP Federation Vasectomy Conference.
This forward-thinking group of General Practitioners is advancing surgical care across Northern Ireland, with expertise in skin cancer surgery, carpal tunnel release, and non-scalpel vasectomies under local anesthesia.
The talk was well received, and the momentum for integrating POCUS continues to grow locally.
On April 26, 2025, GUSI conducted an exclusive 1-on-1 Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound Course at Middleway Surgery in Cornwall, UK. Dr. Pascual Daza-Ramirez provided comprehensive training to Dr. Ciaran Spencer, covering diagnostic ultrasound assessments of the shoulder, hip, wrist, knee, and ankle joints. The afternoon session included hands-on ultrasound-guided injection techniques performed on a consented patient, offering practical, real-world application in a clinical setting.
A special thank you to Dr. Daza-Ramirez for his expert instruction and dedication to advancing ultrasound education.
GUSI’s UK team is delighted to offer high-yield lectures and hands-on scanning sessions. The first opportunity for GPs in Northern Ireland to participate in training for Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS).
“Bedside ultrasound has consistently influenced my diagnostic and management decisions. It reduces the need for “watching and waiting” or “sitting with uncertainty,” by providing clear, non-invasive answers in minutes. It’s immensely rewarding for that part of me that seeks a higher level of diagnostic certainty, which I can then share with confidence with my patients. This not only builds trust and strengthens rapport but also makes me a better clinician, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes. The best way to determine if bedside ultrasound is right for you is to try it — you’ll quickly see how it can greatly enhance your professional practice.”
Dr. Greg Bailey, MRCGP
GP (1 year post-CCT)
