GUSI introduces a worldwide first: Liver POCUS Fellowships are now available online

Revolutionizing Liver Disease Diagnosis with Pioneering Ultrasound Training

The Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI) has announced the introduction of its Liver Essentials Course and Liver Ultrasound Fellowship Program, which are pioneering initiatives aimed at providing specialized training in liver point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). These programs are designed to empower a wide range of healthcare professionals—such as hepatologists, internal medicine doctors, critical care specialists, and primary care providers—with the advanced skills necessary for the early detection and effective management of liver diseases.

Liver diseases, including cirrhosis, steatosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, represent serious global health issues. The World Health Organization has reported that liver disease remains one of the leading causes of illness and death worldwide, impacting over a million individuals annually due to cirrhosis alone. Timely and accurate diagnoses are vital for improving patient outcomes and addressing this escalating health concern. The launch of GUSI’s programs coincides with the annual congress of the Latin American Liver Association (ALEH) and the forthcoming National Liver Awareness Month, highlighting the urgency of enhancing educational resources in this field.

The Liver Essentials Course offers a thorough educational framework, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical simulation in liver POCUS. Participants will learn to swiftly identify and assess common liver pathologies, which is crucial in clinical environments. The accompanying Fellowship Program builds on this training, providing an advanced hybrid curriculum that ensures competency and meets credentialing standards. Participants will engage in personalized tele-ultrasound sessions with a global team of experts, receive detailed feedback on practice scans, and gain full access to GUSI’s award-winning scanHub™ learning platform, enhancing their overall educational experience.

Dr. Bergman stated, “Our Liver Essentials Course and Fellowship signify a major step forward in medical training. By focusing on specialized liver ultrasound skills, we are bridging a crucial gap in the accurate and early diagnosis of liver diseases. This initiative underscores our dedication to advancing global health through enhanced point-of-care ultrasound education.”

~Dr. Kevin Bergman and Dr. Mena Ramos,
the co-founders of GUSI

He remarked, “This represents a significant advancement for the medical community. By equipping professionals from various specialties with advanced ultrasound techniques, we are laying the groundwork for more precise diagnoses and improved patient care. The effects of this training will reach far beyond individual practices, positively influencing global health outcomes.”

~Dr. Diego Arufe,
Deputy Head of Liver Transplantation at Sanatorio Sagrado Corazón in Buenos Aires,
GUSI’s Hepatology education co-lead.

He said, “GUSI’s liver essentials cover everything from assessing liver anatomy to understanding hepatobiliary pathologies, providing a comprehensive educational journey. Having experienced the benefits of POCUS in my practice, I recognize how the GUSI Fellowship brings a wealth of expertise to support the integration of these techniques into everyday medical practice.”

~Dr. Matteo Rosselli, MD, PhD, FRCP,
Consultant in internal medicine and hepatology

He stated, “The launch of the Liver Essentials Course and Fellowship by GUSI is revolutionary for hepatology. This training will be essential for enhancing our ability to address liver diseases with the accuracy and urgency that patients require.”

~Dr. Amir Gougol,
Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

In summary, GUSI’s Liver Essentials Course and Fellowship Program represent a significant advancement in training healthcare professionals to better diagnose and manage liver diseases. By addressing the critical need for specialized liver ultrasound education, GUSI is set to make a meaningful impact on health outcomes worldwide.
