Pyloric stenosis

Pyloric stenosis in pediatric ultrasound refers to a condition where the pylorus, the outlet of the stomach, thickens and narrows. This obstructs food passage to the small intestine, primarily affecting infants from 2 to 8 weeks old. Symptoms include forceful, non-bilious vomiting after feeding, dehydration, and weight loss.

Ultrasound is the diagnostic tool of choice, revealing an elongated pyloric channel and thickened pyloric muscle. Key measurements for diagnosis are pyloric muscle thickness greater than 3mm and pyloric channel length greater than 15mm. Early ultrasound diagnosis and surgical correction lead to excellent outcomes for this common pediatric surgical emergency.
