Compression technique

In vascular ultrasound, the compression technique is fundamental for accurately assessing blood vessels, particularly veins. This diagnostic method involves applying gentle pressure with the ultrasound transducer to evaluate the compressibility of the vessel. Healthy, unobstructed veins will completely collapse under this pressure, a key indicator of normal blood flow and the absence of thrombi.

Conversely, a vein that does not compress, or only partially compresses, suggests the presence of a thrombus (blood clot), making this technique crucial for diagnosing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Mastery of the compression technique is essential for sonographers to ensure precise and reliable vascular ultrasound examinations.
