Intussusception

Intussusception in pediatrics is a serious medical condition where one segment of the intestine telescopes into an adjacent segment, causing an obstruction. This typically presents in infants and young children with sudden, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and “currant jelly” stools. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent complications like bowel ischemia and perforation.

Ultrasound is the primary diagnostic imaging modality for intussusception due to its non-invasive nature and high accuracy. Sonographic findings, such as the characteristic “target sign” or “pseudokidney sign,” are key for identifying the condition. Pediatric ultrasound expertise for intussusception ensures timely and accurate diagnosis, often leading to successful non-operative reduction via enema.
