Liver trauma

Liver trauma refers to injury sustained by the liver, often due to blunt force or penetrating trauma to the abdomen. As the largest internal organ, the liver is highly susceptible to such injuries, which can range from minor contusions and lacerations to severe ruptures, leading to significant internal bleeding. Early and accurate diagnosis of liver trauma is critical in medical settings, especially in emergency and trauma cases, to prevent life-threatening complications like hemorrhagic shock.

In abdominal ultrasound, liver trauma is assessed by looking for free fluid (hemoperitoneum) around the liver and other abdominal organs, and by directly visualizing liver parenchyma for hematomas or lacerations. Ultrasound offers a rapid, non-invasive bedside tool for initial evaluation, guiding further diagnostic steps and immediate patient management.
