Veno-arterial ECMO

Veno-arterial ECMO (VA-ECMO) is a life-sustaining critical care intervention providing temporary support for severe heart and lung failure. In VA-ECMO, deoxygenated blood is drained from a vein, oxygenated by an external membrane lung, and then returned to an artery, bypassing the heart and lungs. This mechanical circulatory support allows these organs to rest and recover. It’s crucial in critical care for conditions like cardiogenic shock or respiratory distress syndrome.

Ultrasound plays a vital role in VA-ECMO management, aiding in cannulation site assessment, confirmation of catheter placement, and monitoring of cardiac function and potential complications like limb ischemia. Regular ultrasound assessments help optimize support settings and guide clinical decisions, ensuring patient safety and effective treatment in critical care environments.
